Scheduling a Consultation or First Appointment

Deciding that you need some help or support is a big step that is sometimes also confusing and intimidating. When someone decides that want to meet with me, the first thing we do is set up an appointment. I offer free 30 minute consultations on the phone or in person.

The consultation is a chance for you to meet me and ask me any questions about how I work. It’s also a chance for me to learn a little bit about what kind of therapy experience you’re looking for and to make sure I have experience with your specific issue. If I don’t think I’m the right person, I’ll offer you some other referrals to check out. The consultation is not a therapy session.

Some people are just ready to get started and we schedule a first appointment. During the first appointment I make sure there’s time for you to talk about what’s going on, and for you to ask me any questions about how I work.

Under the Forms tab on my website I have PDF versions of my New Client Registration, Consent to Treatment, and Notice of Privacy Policy. If possible, I ask people to read these forms and bring a signed copy to our first appointment. If you don’t have access to a printer, I have hard copies at my office. By reading it ahead of time you can come ready with specific questions and we can save time by not needing to complete the paperwork in session.

Creating a Plan that Works for You

During our first three sessions we will get to know each other better and together define what your goals for therapy are.

I offer both short-term and long-term counseling. The type of counseling that’s best for you depends on your goals and is something that we can discuss when outlining your personal goals. Short-term counseling is typically 12 sessions.

Flexible Scheduling

We can also talk about how often and how long you would like to meet for. I typically meet with clients for 50 minutes once a week. I’ve found that this schedule allows us to work towards your goals faster. However, this doesn’t fit everyone’s life. Other options that client’s have found useful are meeting for 50 minutes three times a month, 80 minutes every other week, or 110 minutes once a month. Individual therapy is 120 for a 50-minute session. Relationship counseling is 140 for a 50-minute session. All fees for alternative time increments are prorated. I have several sliding-fee scale slots that may be available based on financial need and current openings.

I Don’t Know What to Talk About

Some people are very clear about what’s going on and what they want to talk about, and for other’s its harder to pinpoint exactly what the problem is and how to put words to it. That’s OK. You don’t need to know exactly what you want to talk about. That’s where my job comes in. By asking you questions and helping you find connections that you couldn’t see before I work with you to focus in on the heart of the issue and provide support and guidance so we can learn more about it.
